Women entrepreneurs believe they have achieved work-life balance

Women entrepreneurs believe they have achieved work-life balanceWomen entrepreneurs believe they have achieved work-life balanceThe lives of women entrepreneurs are a series of paradoxes, as one new Bank of America survey found. The bank surveyed 1,000 small geschftliches miteinander owners across the country about the state of their careers, and the woman business leaders answers were hopeful that several major workplace problems were either solved or on their way full equality in pay between men and women is only two decades away, they believed, and work-life balance is already achieved.Yet, as a person who doesnt believe that you can work over 40 hours a week and have a work-life balance, their very cheery beliefs about work made me exhausted just reading through them.Women underemphasize their stressHeres an interesting contradiction, for instance although 61% of women entrepreneurs report working more than 40 hours each week, 78% believe they have achieved awork-life balance. In their responses, women were quick to primarily emphasize the good about their jobs. The majority of women said that being an entrepreneur was interesting, fulfilling, and enjoyable. But once that was out of the way, a significant number of them admitted that they were stressed and exhausted. Nearly half of them said that their average week was demanding and one in three said that their workdays were stressful. And no wonder theyre stressed out Theyre underpaid. A 2017 report found that women entrepreneurs earn less than their male counterparts and raise less financial capital than them. And theyre outnumbered. Women only own 34% of all companies in the United States. Research found that men are what gets presented as the business owner ideal. Not being seen as entrepreneur material gets women excluded from the networks, contacts, and access needed to become great business leaders. In fact, to get around this, two female entrepreneurs recently fabricated a male co-founder just to get m eetings with investors. And yet, despite the challenges they face, the majority of women entrepreneurs still said that there would be more women-owned small businesses and 61% said that they would achieve pay equitywith men within the next 20 years. Additionally,68% believe women will match or exceed men in becoming CEOs, CFOs and COOs, and80% believe there will be just as many or more women than men in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.So mark your calenders in 2037, all of womens problems at work will be solved.Heres hoping.

From the President April 2015

From the President April 2015 From the President April 2015 Deepwater Five Years Later Its hard to believe that nearly five years have passed since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. That explosion, which occurred on April 20, 2010, not only triggered unprecedented contamination of the northern Gulf of Mexico, but also launched an unparalleled research and investigative effort to evaluate the effects of the massive spill, in which an estimated five million barrels of crude oil gushed into the pristine waters of the Gulf over 91 days. It also prompted industry leaders, engineers, government officials and others to take measures to prevent such incidents from ever happening again. In an article that ran on ASME.org in September 2011, Deconstructing the Deepwater Horizon Blowout, it was reported that the blowout preventer valves and the shear rams designed to cut through and seal the drill pipe failed, allowing oil and gas to surge up to the rig floor and trigger the explosion that sadly took the lives of 11 workers. While innovation and the evolution of engineering technology are making invaluable contributions to the betterment of ur lives and advancing our knowledge, we also know that mitigating risk will always be an important part of the engineering equation. The June 2011 ASME report Initiative to Address Complex Systems Failure Prevention and Mitigation of Consequences stated that Now more than ever, there is a need to address these dynamic and far-reaching system failures. The report went on to say that while events such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks and human error are bound to occur, engineers can design complex systems to help manage risk and to reduce the likelihood of cascading failures.Later this year, Ive been invited to speak at the World Engineering Conference and Convention, in Kyoto, Japan, to talk about the lessons engineers have learned from another disaster - the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident - a result of the great Japa n earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011. In the ASME report, Forging a New Nuclear Safety Construct, a Presidential Task Force commissioned by then-ASME President Victoria Rockwell stated that Fukushima revealed new information on nuclear power plant vulnerabilities to extreme external events and advocated the need for permanent improvements to existing plants and new designs to address beyond design fundament events. The nuclear industry has responded by developing new standards and guidance to minimize the probability of occurrence and to better mitigate the consequences of future accidents. We all know that as new cutting-edge technologies are implemented and systems become more complex, the need to manage risk and to apply safety and operational standards becomes ever more paramount. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal announced that the Obama administration has proposed new offshore oil and natural gas drilling regulations aimed at preventing the kind of explo sion that occurred on the Deepwater Horizon rig. The proposed regulations, which target the reliability of drilling equipment in offshore drilling operations, will require oil and gas companies to perform tests and maintenance on their blowout preventers, a key piece of drilling equipment. The Interior Department regulations are aimed at imposing tougher standards on equipment designed to keep control of a well and require real-time monitoring of certain kinds of deep water drilling or drilling performed under high pressure. In addition, the oil and gas industry has responded aggressively by developing new guidance and is continuing to work to ensure the integrity of offshore operations.Engineers will continue to play a key role in improving the safety and reliability of deepwater and other energy technologies. As stated in the June 2011 report, experience, knowledge and tools across industries are needed to aid engineers in designing fault-tolerant systems, assessing and managing r isk in systems operation, and considering the ethical responsibility associated with the management and maintenance of complex systems. Its precisely this dedication to ongoing innovation and public safety that unites us as engineers and makes me so proud to be a part of our global ASME community. So I say again what an honor to be one of you, and what a great opportunity it is to serve this profession in its many and varied aspects. J. Robert Sims ASME President

4 Career Revelations From My 20s

4 Career Revelations From My 20s4 Career Revelations From My 20sI graduated from college more than 10 years ago and like every new graduate, I felt fear, anxiety and confusion course through my body from the realization that I had absolutely no idea what I welches doing. Working as an assistant at a market research company, surrounded by market analysts who were highly regarded as experts in their fields, I wondered what it would take to rise through the ranks and be as admired and respected as my colleagues were.In particular, I marveled at the female analysts with whom I worked. On telephone calls with the media and onstage at conferences, they exuded such confidence and were so knowledgeable on their topics of study. I wondered Would that ever be me? Do I have what it takes? What should I do to try to get there, or anywhere, for that matter? This welches before the days of LinkedIn, Facebook, About.me and any other online directory. So you might wonder how did a directionless but m otivated 20-something, new to the working world but determined to make good professional choices, secure much-desired career guidance without the benefit of studying (for the purposes of emulating) the biographies of those she admired? This is how she identified people who intrigued her. She approached them and very simply, yet earnestly stated, My name is Stephanie and I feel lost. I want to know about your life. I want to know what you did right. I want to know the things you would have done differently. I want to know what you wish you would have known when you were my age. Can you spare a moment in your busy schedule to speak with me?After sharing this story with a friend, he quickly concluded, Oh cool, you sought out a mentorearly in your career. While this is technically true, I felt that this label missed the mark. A mentorship implies a structured and focused course of discussion. Contrarily, what really took place were freeform, nearly meandering conversations, which yielded some of the most important revelations in my life. Moreover, I still keep these life lessons in mind as I navigate my career and my life.My favorite revelations from these conversations1) fruchtwein career paths are more circuitous than they may appear. We are groomed to always have, know and cultivate our story- to pitch our lives as if every step in our careers was planned and purposeful. In an age where we carefully edit our life experiences on our online profiles, we forget that people move from zigging to zagging (and then right back to zigging like they were before). In my conversations with colleagues they often admitted, I tried this for a while, and I hated that. So, then I thought, maybe this I did that instead and that turned into this other thing This helped me to realize that plans are sometimes unplanned and come into existence by accident or unintentionally. Choices are never permanent and within reason, you can change your mind, change your direction, make a mistake and correct the course you initially chose to take.2) Life can be better understood by evaluating options that are not chosen. Each of our life stories is an aggregate of the choices that we have made. However, the value of life can be understood in a richer context by examining the unchosen choices, understanding the reasons why they werent selected and conjecturing how things might have turned out if they had. I enjoyed hearing my colleagues describe the potential paths their lives could have taken the jobs they didnt take, the partners they turned down, the decisions they delayed, and the options they abandoned altogether. It helped me to better understand who they were and how they ended up in their current roles. Also, I realized that my life would be a Choose Your Own Adventure, and only I could choose the next exciting turn of the plot line.3) Serendipity plays a big role in how things play out.In a meritocracy, we like to believe that hard work drives what we accomplish. We prepared for an interview and got that dream job. We worked very hard and were promoted to a higher-level position. Yet, the truth is sometimes things around us happen and we are merely the lucky recipients of these unpredictable occurrences. My colleagues shared circumstances that were outside of their control and led to developments in their careers. For example, someone vacating a position enabled him or her to advance in a new role. Meanwhile, someone else quickly landed a job where the original description of that role changed completely. This made me feel hopeful and it made me realize that I should focus on what I could actually control while being open to, and ready for, any luck that may come my way.4) Everyone struggles in their 20s. Everyone. A lucky few realize exactly what they were put on this earth to do at a young age. In fact, I remember having a conversation with the college counselor at my high school when I was younger, and she rather snarkily observed, People wh o know exactly what they are meant to do at a young age are just doing exactly what their parents have always told them they should do If given the chance, I suspect that any sophisticated, accomplished professional will tell you, I was a mess when I was your age and then detail an existence rife with befuddlement or distress that eerily mirrors your current situation. Hearing this admission helped me manage my insecurities and fears. It was also comforting to know that I wasnt alone in my experiences.Working at Simply Hired, where effort is focused on making the job search process efficient and fast through technology, it may sound strange for me to extol the merits of putting down technological devices and reaching out to one another as human beings. But what Im trying to say, and I hope you will agree, is that important details can be missed and facts can be misrepresented or misinterpreted in an online-only world. These minutiae can only be discovered, digested and savored if we stop, turn to one another, and casually say, Hello.

7 In-Demand Careers That Are Predicted to Grow by 30 Percent or More

7 In-Demand Careers That Are Predicted to Grow by 30 Percent or More 7 In-Demand Careers That Are Predicted to Grow by 30 Percent or More In the early 1800s, gas lamplighters completed an important job. Each night, they’d light the flames on the gas lamps around the city. In the morning, they’d snuff them out again. But once electricity came onto the scene, that job faded into history. Whenever technology advances, the professional landscape changes with it. Some jobs disappear, but others grow by leaps and bounds. By   training for a growing field , you can improve your chances for job security in the years to come. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), these are seven of the fastest-growing careers today. Check out the forecasted growth of these jobs, and learn how you can get in on the action . As the world moves toward sustainable energy sources, there will be more and more “green” jobs . Because of that, it makes sense that wind turbine service technicians are one of the fastest-growing jobs today. BLS predicts a whopping 108 percent growth outlook for this position over the next seven years. You could make $52,260 per year installing and repairing wind turbines. Most technicians   learn the trade at a technical school  and gain plenty of hands-on experience. Besides ample training, the job has one more requirement: You can’t be afraid of heights. If you’re comfortable in the water, you might be interested in becoming a commercial diver, another of today’s fastest-growing jobs. BLS predicts 37 percent job growth for divers, where you could make $53,990 per year inspecting and repairing equipment underwater. Most divers go to diving school; the best ones are accredited by the Association of Commercial Diving Educators. Although the work can be physically demanding, you’ll definitely have the most unique workspace of all your friends. Physical therapists help their patients manage pain and recover from injury. As a physical therapist, you’ll show patients how to do therapeutic exercises and improve their mobility. You might incorporate alternative treatments, like yoga and massage therapy. Most physical therapists complete a three-year doctor of physical therapy program. You might also need to complete an internship and meet state licensing requirements. This worthwhile job - which commands a median salary of $85,400 - is predicted to grow by an impressive 34 percent over the next few years. Without statisticians, we might never have all this data about the fastest-growing careers. Statisticians collect and analyze data to understand patterns and predict trends. They can work in any field or industry, whether that’s in academia, private business or government. To become a statistician, you’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree in statistics or math (though many employers also require a master’s degree). The job pays well, with a median salary of $80,500 per year. And here’s another statistic you’ll like: BLS predicts the job will by grow by 34 percent. Nurse practitioners are advanced registered nurses that largely share the same responsibilities as doctors. They examine patients, diagnose diseases and give treatments. In 21 states, nurse practitioners can work independently of a physician. Not only does this job help people in a major way, but it also pays well . According to the BLS, the median pay for nurse practitioners in 2016 was $107,460. What’s more, this career is expected to grow by 31 percent over the next few years, a rate much faster than the seven percent national average for all occupations. So, how can you snag one of the 53,400 positions expected to open up before 2024? You’ll need to become a registered nurse and earn your Master of Science in nursing. If you worry about accruing student debt while pursuing this career field, you’ll be happy to hear that   nurses qualify for student loan forgiveness . In addition to other requirements, you’ll need a license and certification in your state. You might need one, for instance, in an area such as pediatric care or family medicine. As a nurse practitioner, you’ll continue to take classes and earn credits throughout your career. Even with self-driving cars on the horizon, BLS expects ambulance drivers to be one of the fastest-growing careers. In fact, there could be 33 percent more ambulance drivers in 2024 than there were in 2014. To work as an ambulance driver, you must complete 80 to 120 hours of basic EMT training. Plus, you’ll need to be able to handle high-pressure situations that involve medical emergencies. Although you’ll be helping save lives, the work doesn’t pay very well. The BLS puts the median salary at  $23,850 per year. If you’re a wizard with your personal finances, you might excel at advising others. As a personal financial advisor, you’ll help individuals manage their finances. You might help with taxes, mortgages or retirement planning. You could work at a financial services firm or break out on your own as an independent contractor. Although requirements vary based on your specific role, most financial advisors have a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Plus, a master’s degree or certification could boost your credentials and attract clientele. By advising others about their income, you’ll be making a median of $90,530 per year. And you don’t have to worry about your job getting taken over by robo-advisors - the BLS predicts that the number of personal financial advisors will grow by 30 percent before 2024. With technology advancing at a rapid pace, it’s hard to predict what the future will look like. Some jobs that are common today could be replaced by machines before we know it. You don’t want to find out the hard way that the job you have today will be gone tomorrow. If you’re still figuring out your career, consider training for one of the fastest-growing jobs listed above. Check out data from the BLS to learn which careers are expanding and which ones are going the way of the gas lamplighter. That way, you can   ensure job security  - and financial well-being - for years to come. This article was originally published on Student Loan Hero . It is reprinted with permission.

Follow Up Letters for College Alumni Networking Events

Follow Up Letters for College Alumni Networking Events Follow Up Letters for College Alumni Networking Events Attending college alumni networking events is a smart way to expand your list of professional contacts and, ideally, to discover new career opportunities. However, attending the event itself is only half the battle â€" what is key is to then follow up as quickly as possible with the participating alumni. Plan to spend the day after each networking event working on custom letters for each contact you met. In these letters, you should make sure to reference the topics you discussed and express your appreciation for their time. Sending an email message is fine, but, if you have the time, a paper letter sent by mail is a good way to get the readers attention. It is essential to remember that these letters are intended primarily to give thanks for advice and conversation. While it is fine to express your hope that you’ll keep in touch and even to mention that you are actively pursuing a career in the alumni’s industry or at their place of employment, this is not the time to directly ask for a referral or a job interview. Instead, use this letter to start the conversation necessary to ultimately build an ongoing, mutually beneficial professional relationship. Review examples of a paper letter and an email message sent to follow up after meeting with an alumni contact. Follow Up Letter to Alumni Met at College Networking Event Here is an example of a follow-up letter to send via snail mail to a contact you have met at a college alumni networking event. Mr. Daniel MirandaXYZ Publishing House456 7th AvenueNew York, New York 10018Dear Mr. Miranda,It was a pleasure meeting you at the ABC College Alumni Networking Dinner last week. I truly enjoyed speaking with you about current career tracks in the publishing field.Your description of a typical workday at the XYZ Publishing House only increased my interest in a publishing career. Our conversation started the wheels spinning in my mind about how I will be able to transfer the writing and editing skills I’ve learned as a journalism major to a “real world” employment setting after my graduation this June.I am currently beginning my search for summer internships in the publishing field. I believe my communications skills and the experience I gained as a writer and then senior editor for our college newspaper and its associated website would make me an ideal editorial intern. Please let me know if you hear of any internship opportunities at XYZ Publishing House, or if you have any sug gestions regarding people or companies to contact.Thank you so much for your willingness to help students from ABC College.Sincerely,Lindsay Shia876 East St.New Brunswick, NJ 08901555-111-1234lindsay.shiagmail.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lindsay-shia Expand Email Follow Up Message to Alumni Met at College Networking Event If you send the letter as an email message, include your name in the subject of the message so your contact knows who the message is coming from. It is not necessary to include the recipient’s contact information in an email, but you should provide all of your own contact information so that he or she has multiple ways to respond to you. Your message will have a better chance of being opened and read if the recipient is aware of who is writing. Here’s an example: Subject: Greg Ellesworth  - Thank YouDear Ms. Jones,Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me during our recent Alumni Networking Conference at ABC College.Your description of the opportunities and challenges you enjoy at XYZ Software has reinforced my intention to place them on my “A list” of companies I’d like to work for after I graduate with my computer science degree this May.I was particularly interested in learning how you yourself started as an intern with XYZ Software and steadily earned promotion to your current position â€" it’s exciting to see how the company supports the career growth of its employees. If you hear of any internship opportunities that are opening with XYZ, I’d be more than grateful if you would forward the listing to me, either at the email or through the LinkedIn address listed below.Thank you so much for your willingness to help students from ABC College.Sincerely,Greg Ellesworth576 S. Employee Referrals and your Talent Acquisition Strategy

Employee Referrals and your Talent Acquisition Strategy Employee Referrals and your Talent Acquisition Strategy Employee Referrals and your Talent Acquisition Strategy Rossheim For cost-conscious companies recruiting in a buyers labor market, the allure of employee referrals is multi-faceted: theyre a high-yield source of qualified candidates who are more likely than average to fit the companys culture. And the main expense for employee referral programs (ERPs) is the cash incentive for referring employees a cost that can be much lower than a recruiters commission. Still, employee referrals as a bottom-up, crowdsourcing approach do not constitute a total candidate sourcing solution. Lets take a look at how employee referrals fit into the big picture of talent acquisition. The relationships the thing The quality of the personal connection to the candidate may be the top selling point for employee referrals. Everything we do is relationship-based, says Chris Carlson, a senior manager in People Services at consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton. Who would know better than our employees who we should hire? Indeed, more than 55 percent of Booz Allens new hires are sourced from the 1,700 employee referrals the firm receives in an average month. ERP is just one aspect of sourcing process Even when firms are very bullish on their ERPs, they dont view it as their exclusive sourcing solution. Every time a position opens, the ERP is only a component of it, says Carlson. An actual recruiter will own the requisition and will look at all possible sourcing channels, to provide diverse and diversely sourced candidates. An effective ERP is high-touch In the 2010s, employers with the most effective referral programs must continue to invest in them with both infrastructure and personalized communications. Booz Allen, for example, personally acknowledges both the referring employee and the referred potential candidate with 48 hours, often with a phone call. A dedicated internal ERP web portal serves as the center of employee referral activity. Efficacy of employee referrals depends on position Some positions are much more likely than others to be filled by candidates sourced by employee referral. Companies find that employee referrals of sales representatives, for example, are frequently converted to hires. But filling a requisition for a very specialized software engineer may require postings on job boards or the services of a headhunter. When the talent need is urgent Employee referrals enjoy a reputation of fast time-to-hire, but only if the right people emerge organically. Time is of the essence, so if we dont have an employee referral when we need it, well actively source by a number of other possible channels, says Deborah Hankin, head of talent management at marketing communications firm G2 USA in New York City. Both referrals and sophisticated search can source a few good candidates With chronic high unemployment, many companies have grown weary of the mountains of resumes they receive every month. By comparison, fielding much smaller numbers of employee referrals may seem a more reasonable approach. But in recent years, the semantic search capabilities of resume databases have advanced by leaps and bounds, enabling recruiters to more easily find those few shining candidates among thousands. So both employee sourcing approaches are practical; in many cases, both are necessary for the recruitment of optimal hires. Sourcing to satisfy hiring managers Employee referrals dont necessarily save time or avoid the involvement of recruiters or agencies, because hiring managers want to see a full slate of candidates, says Steve Lopez, director of consulting services at Manpower Inc. in Dallas. A couple of internal referrals even good ones wont by themselves fill that bill. Can there be too many employee referrals? One ongoing debate over employee referrals is whether such a program, if it dominates a companys sourcing, will bring on unhealthy heterogeneity. There is such as a thing as too much of a good thing, says Lopez. Well ask the question of what the balance should be. Diversity of thought and background and experience are important. The hiring of new blood that is unaffiliated with the professional networks of incumbent employees may indeed be crucial to a companys capacity for innovation. Integrating employee referrals with agency services Recognizing the power and value of employee referrals, many recruiters and agencies are working with customers to create cost-effective, multi-channel sourcing solutions. Sometimes a client will have their own ERP, and well fit our program and pricing around that, says Lopez. Cost of employee referrals is moderate The relatively modest cost of employee referrals has made them popular with many employers If we use an external recruiter for a $100,000 job, we would pay the recruiter $20,000, says Hankin. Thats a lot more than G2s $3,000 incentive for a successful employee referral. But posting to job sites alone would be the least expensive. Keep in mind that an employers analysis of ERP costs should include not only the reward paid to employees but also program expenses such as communications with referring employees and tracking of referrals from multiple sourcing channels. The key to better workplace productivity may be self-driving cars

The key to better workplace productivity may be self-driving cars The key to better workplace productivity may be self-driving cars One of the biggest draws for self-driving cars is that they’ll significantly reduce auto collisions and traffic. Yet another is that they’ll give us back time - in more ways than one. Given how much time Americans spend at the wheel every day, cars that can drive themselves could relinquish a significant number of hours to focus on other things, like getting a head start on work. From increasing mental bandwidth to extending sleep, here’s how driverless cars could be the answer to improved workplace productivity.Free up brain spaceWhen you’re driving, you can’t zone out completely but you also don’t need all your mental bandwidth - particularly on those painfully dull roads or highways.Passive activities like listening to the radio or talking to someone in the backseat can usually be done without a hitch. But activities, like reading an article or replying to emails, occupy too much cognitive space (not to mention, they’re incredibly dangerous while driving). Enter aut onomous technology, and all that attention directed on the road could be redirected elsewhere.Similar to public transportation, which enables passengers to read the paper or use their phones, if cars are transformed into mini mobile offices, this byproduct of commuting will be all the more common. On top of replying to emails, imagine being able to video chat with a colleague or get a jumpstart on a demanding project.Additionally, according to a report by Morgan Stanley, productivity gains afforded by autonomous vehicles could surpass $500 billion a year in the U.S. Savvy companies might, therefore, subsidize costs associated with owning and maintaining an autonomous vehicle. These could include upfront expenses, maintenance, and car insurance payments.Get more shut-eyeSleep deprivation is a productivity nightmare. A study from RAND Europe found that poor sleep costs the U.S. workforce $411 billion annually.Driverless cars could be the antidote. Not only do they afford a head start on work, they also create the opportunity to curl up in the back seat and get a quick snooze in.If you consider the fact that Americans spend more than 50 minutes a day commuting, the time for extra sleep adds up fast. And that’s not even to mention, high-traffic urban areas, where commute times might be double (or more) the national average.Have your car run errands for youErrands that used to require us getting behind the wheel may soon be possible in our absence. While they’re not a reality yet, in the future, we may see smaller non-occupant vehicles specifically designed to run errands. Think a vehicle only big enough to carry a few bags of groceries. It would take up far less space on the road, and it wouldn’t be obtrusive when parked at home. While it’s out and about, you could put your feet up and relax or drain your deluged inbox. The hurdles for self-driving cars are increasingIn order for self-driving cars to boost productivity, people will need to trust them first.T he University of Michigan published a study last year on whether self-driving cars would actually spur productivity. They found that productivity gains from driverless cars would only come about if the following issues are addressed: Confidence in the technology itself (otherwise, people will just watch the road nervously) Problems with motion-sickness Posture and seating position Loose objects “becoming projectiles during crashes” Truth be told, change will not happen overnight. As safety issues are addressed and passenger confidence goes, so might productivity gains be felt, along with the slew of other estimated benefits.Stephanie Braun is the Director of Connected Car at Esurance. She is responsible for designing the company’s auto product lines and managing telematics programs, like DriveSense Mobile. Stephanie has 11 years of experience in the auto insurance industry, focused primarily on product design and launch, pricing and product innovation. She writes on a wide range of auto insurance topics related to self-driving cars and telematics.

How much does a pint of beer cost around the world

How much does a pint of beer cost around the world How much does a pint of beer cost around the world Our latest visualization maps out the average price of a pint of beer (defined as 11.2 oz) in major cities across the globe. The data comes from a list compiled by  The Wall Street Journal, which used the Beer Price Index from travel aggregator site  OMIO  (formerly Go Euro) to compare prices across different cities. For comparison purposes, foreign currencies were converted into USD. For our visualization, we used the average beer price at a bar rather than at a supermarket.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Global cities with the most expensive pints of beer1. Hong Kong, China: $10.86 2. Geneva, Switzerland: $10.77 3. Tel Aviv, Israel: $9.53 4. New York, USA: $8.97 5. Miami, USA: $8.97Global cities with the least expensive pints of beer1. Bratislava, Slovakia: $2.22 2. Delhi, India: $2.31 3. Kiev, Ukraine: $2.36 4. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: $2.58 5. Kraków, Poland: $2.70In addition to highlighting beer prices, the visualization shows how much beer is consumed per capita. The larger the circle, the more beer the city’s residents drink. In general, people in major cities in Europe and North America consume more beer than people in Asian cities (with the exception of Ho Chi Minh City). Another overall trend is that cities with higher-priced beer (shown by the orange and pink outlines on the circles) tend to have lower amounts of per capita beer consumption compared to cities with cheaper beer (shown by the yellow and green outlines on the circles). Resignation Letter Templates (and Advice for How to Write One)

Resignation Letter Templates (and Advice for How to Write One) Resignation Letter Templates (and Advice for How to Write One) Amid the excitement of preparing for a new role, drafting a resignation letter may seem like just one more hurdle to cross before you can move onto the next stage of your career. However, like every aspect of resigning, it is important to maintain a professional approach. So, even if your boss doesn’t ask for notification in writing, handing over a resignation letter can enhance your professional reputation and support a healthy working relationship with your manager. Not sure what to say? Follow our resignation letter template The key is to remain diplomatic. Don’t turn your resignation letter into a list of grievances. You may want to work for the company again at some stage, or you could cross paths professionally with your current boss further down the road. At the very least, you may need your employer to provide a reference for you. So, keep your letter positive and tactful. Bear in mind, your resignation letter should follow up to a face-to-face meeting with your manager. Draft the main points of your letter in advance but wait until you have had a conversation with your manager to fine-tune the wording so that it reflects the main points of your conversation. SEARCH OUR OPEN JOBS What your resignation letter should include Your resignation letter doesn’t have to be long or complicated, but some aspects should be standard. Date your letter so there's written documentation of how much formal notice you have given the company. Address the letter to the appropriate person. Keep the opening paragraph short and to the point regarding your intention to resign. Provide the date of your last day with the company. Sign your letter, followed by with your personal/forwarding contact information for any post-departure questions or communication. Hand-deliver the printed letter (or mail it). You can also attach the Word document to an email to your human resources department, copying your manager. Extend an offer of support Make it clear in your letter that you are willing to assist with training your replacement and preparing your team for your exit. Explain that you will aim to complete your current tasks before you leave and provide key information in writing about contacts or dates when regular duties need to be completed. Take a look at our resignation letter example below see how this can be done. Note your appreciation in writing Even though you may not always have enjoyed positive experiences in your current role, it’s likely your employer has invested time and money training you for the position. This makes it courteous to thank your manager for the opportunities you’ve been given. No job is smooth sailing all the time, and it can help to think back to some of the best times with the company to set the tone of your thank-you. It’s all part of adopting a professional approach to your resignation letter and leaving behind a good impression. What to avoid It’s likely your employer will store your resignation letter with other employee files, and it may be referred to in the future if another company requests a reference. This being the case, a poorly written or overly critical resignation letter has the potential to impact your career long after you’ve moved on from your current job. Don’t explain why you are leaving. Don’t vent about the downsides of the job, your coworkers or the company. Don’t brag about what you’re doing next. Don’t send an unedited letter with errors. Stick to the basics, no more than one page. Keep the tone positive and professional, and your resignation letter can’t work against you at any point in the future. 11 Inspired Ten Steps to a Federal Job

11 Inspired Ten Steps to a Federal Job 9/11 Inspired Ten Steps to a Federal Job 9/11 Inspired Ten Steps to a Federal Job First Edition Second Edition Third Edition Brian Moore designed Covers for First and Second Editions. Paulina Chen designed the cover for the Third Edition. The first edition book won Best Careers Book of the Year, Ben Franklin Award. Did you know that the idea for the book Ten Steps to a Federal Job was essentially started because of the events of 9/11? Starting on the day after the attack, concerned US citizens were calling our office at The Resume Place, Inc. to ask for help with applying for federal positions. We saw that Americans needed a quick step-by-step guide to federal jobs in order to understand the complex application process and successfully apply for the anti-terrorism, emergency management, and law enforcement careers. I wrote and published the first edition of Ten Steps to a Federal Job within months after Sept. 11, 2001. US citizens would call and say, â€Å"I want to have a job that will make a difference. I want to help protect our nation’s security. I don’t want to sell computers, or cars, or financial services anymore. I want a job with a federal agency that can make a difference for America. I don’t know anything about federal jobs, but I want a job where I can help make America more secure, somehow, some way. Jobseekers were in a hurry to land a job where they could make a difference in America against terrorism. They wanted jobs where they could contribute their skills to new careers in security, safety, disaster preparedness, analysis, data, and communications to increase information about and reduce terrorism toward America. Financial job seekers from the New York City financial district were calling to find new careers using the financial background that they developed for many years in NYC. Their businesses were gone, many colleagues were lost during the attacks, and thousands of jobs were wiped away. We helped many financial analysts and financial specialists relocate and redirect their careers into financial services in government agencies. Hundreds of new public service job seekers were asking about first-time federal jobs where they could make a difference. Agencies and jobs that were of the most interest were: FBI – Police and law enforcement people wanted to help the FBI track terrorists. TSA – This agency was formed very soon after 9/11, and many police personnel retired and security and law enforcement personnel flocked to TSA. FEMA – Emergency preparedness, disaster preparedness, and EMT personnel were seeking positions to take care of emergencies that may occur in America following this day. CIA, NSA, NGA – People from all walks of life were interested in intelligence positions, including language specialists, especially Arabic language speakers. DHS, including CIS, CBP – People wanted to be part of change in immigration, customs and border work to help monitor those who came to the country safety. HHS, CDC – Public interest spiked in epidemiology, biology, and forensics as related to possible terrorism in America. Military services – Thousands of brave Americans volunteered for the active duty and reserves services and would deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan for many tours over these past 10 years to protect America. Ten Steps to a Federal Job gave thousands of patriotic, public service-oriented Americans the steps they needed to try to begin a public service career that could help improve our watchful eye against terrorism, to serve expert skills in counter-terrorism; assist with emergency preparedness; design continuity plans; and help manage disasters that we hope won’t occur. The Ten Steps to a Federal Job curriculum is still being taught in military bases around the world to military personnel and spouses who are currently serving America to ensure the safety and security of US Citizens. A message of sincere appreciate also goes out to the military personnel who have served for the last 10 years and sacrificed SO MUCH to protect America in Iraq and Afghanistan. We at The Resume Place, Inc. are dedicated to helping the military and public servants continue to protect the security of Americans. Sincerely, Kathryn Troutman, Author and Publisher, Ten Steps to a Federal Job, now in 3rd edition.
